During each literature circle, post a comment about the book.
  • First, summarize your class's discussion of the book's ideas, characters, symbols, etc.
  • Next, write 2-3 questions that you would like for the other class to answer.
  • Finally, respond to the comments that the students in the other class shared on this blog.

In class today was talked about what has happened so far with each character. We discussed the symbolism of the boots, whether or not there is one.
Do you guys see any symbolism with the boots?
We discussed the pronounciniation of all the names.
Do you know how to say any of them?
Do you think the discussion about Corporal Himmelstoss is foreshadowing about an event to happen in the future involving the Corporal or some of his entencity of dicipline?

Kara, Kelsey, and Madeline but she not here...

Well, we discussed the book too. Neither Brent or I remember what we talked about because it was almost a week ago that we had our lit square. We think that the boots symbolize security and comfort. We can't pronounce German names as well as you guys. Use any accent you can think of, you might even want to sound angry when you say them. We think Himmelstoss will calm down once he sees what the front looks like.

    Sincerely,
    Matt and Brent

After reading, do you guys have any questions?
We agree that he will settle down once he sees the front but that discussion betweent he soldiers also forshadowed his being beaten and lectured.
one of our questions after readind was who is the speaker in this book? is the author trying to switch up perspectives or are we just retarded?
what did you guys think about the discussion about the boys' futures and how the was has changed them...is it realistic?
also, what charistics are you starting to see in the main charactars that will eturmin who will survive?
    boots idea=good

we pretty much did what you did. we talked about the brutal murder of the Frenchies. We already tried to blog back, but Mrs. M accidentally deleted it. Fo' sheezy. Well, the author isn't switching perspectives, he's just doing a bunch o' flashbacks to make things confusing. The war I think is ruining their lives, because they keep talking about how they are no longer kids.

    Talk to you later.
    Love,
    Matt and Brent

    hey

so we discussed the idea of how the war was controlling and changing the slodiers lives, and how it had altered their outlook on life. one good example of this is the way Paul sees his home life once he goes back on a leave, how he feels out of place and disconnected. though that is the main theme of the chapter paul still has a connection to his home and family because he saves some of the cakes his mother made remembering her hard work. Quote: pg 194, 2ns paragraph, the whole paragraph.

one of the questions we had was when does this story take place? we can't tell if it is at the beginning or end of the war, but we suspect that it will be revealed as we read further into the story.
another question is why does paul give food to the russian prisioners, is it an effect of the war? also does the poster symbolize anything? we thought it was an escape and a reminder of life outside the war...?

    love the girls

    HOWDY!

Well, we talked about the symbols of the book, like his home, the war, and the Russian prisoners. Is there anything that you can add to what we talked about? We were confused on why he felt that going home was so bad. What do you think? I think his mom will croak.

To answer tus preguntas, we think they are smack dab in the middle of the war. We think that he give the commies food because he realizes that they are in a worse predicament than he is. The poster represents his want for ladies. Chea.

We think that he thought home was so bad because he and his family had changed so much and grown apart. as for why pauls is so nice, we think that the war has opened his eyes to humaninty and has become sympathetic because of it.
Today in class we talked about the motifs of death and blood, animal instinct, innocence and the affect of war on the soldiers. Do you guys have any ideas about these? We thuoght that the animal instinct motif was very strong, it is periodiocally mentioned throught the book and in the scene where paul is leaving the dougout. Paul sees the soldiers as "human animals" that are very mechanical in their ways at war. For both that and the effect of war on the slodiers motifs QUOTE: p 219-220.
For the innocence we saw that the soldiers innocence was stripped from them as the war went on.

as for questions...we saw death and gore in all the battle scenes, what kind of a symbol do you think that has? Also what are some of your predictions?

    Love Kara Kelsey and Madeline
